EXCERPTS FROM "THE PRISONER POTENTATE"
An Inspirational Allegory with Answers for Today's Challenges!

In a galaxy, frighteningly similar to our own, is a tiny principality called The Wastelands of Inferiority. Formally known as Hopeville, its constituents had renamed the region in a despondent attempt to face the reality of its tragic demise. No, they didn’t give up without a fight. These were proud people with aspirations to further extend their borders by discovering and acquiring new territories. Now, to their chagrin, their fatherland lies in ruins and they are the conquered, not the conquerors. They have been overrun by barbarians of which “Rejection,” “Disappointment,” and “Fear” are commanding officers. These marauding opponents stalked the little kingdom, pillaged its once-lush fields, burned stately homes to mere ashes and stripped the countryside of its productiveness.

Enormous and terrifying, this unstoppable battalion of assailants broke much more than trees and twigs in trampling through rural and urban settlements. Heartlessly, this vicious band broke the spirit of a once-exalted nation. Stealing more than gold and silver, these hateful adversaries stole the peace and security upon which the citizens had come to rely. In its place, the inhabitants were left with a pervading feeling of uncertainty, anxiety and apprehension.

Finally, conceding that they were no match against the might and power of their enemies, the weary remnant of warriors retreated in shame to their battle-torn villages. Admitting defeat, their situation looked hopeless. Surrender was their only option.

_______________________

Years have past. The barbaric monsters have moved on to other conquests, returning only occasionally to ensure the territory remains but a shadow of its former self.

Broken and battered, each member of this little kingdom is attempting to cope with the devastation in their own way. Regardless of the semblance of normality, the carnage has taken its toll.

Perspectives on life have been warped. The people concentrate merely on survival rather than on building a future as they once had done. The properties of individual residents have come to mirror the lives and attitudes of each person who lives within the boundaries of this district, now known as The Wastelands of Inferiority.

Perhaps most affected by the oppressive land of Inferiority is a man named Renaldo. He lies shackled beneath the ruins of an old, abandoned castle. Clothed only in ragged, shredded clothes, his appearance epitomizes the shrazzeled state of his mind. Renaldo has been here so long, he has no recollections of the tragic events that led up to his imprisonment. Day and night, the questions plague him: What horrible crime did I commit to be so miserably treated? Do I have a family? Did the deplorability of my transgression cause them to turn their backs on me?

The self-righteous sneers of the townsfolk who pass by his tiny twelve by eight inch window leave him in no doubt that he is an outcast of society. None dare venture to speak to him, yet their visages speak volumes.

Renaldo correctly surmises that the embittered residents of Inferiority feel somehow superior when they perchance to wander past his confinement. Mocking the inmate makes them feel better about their own lowly state. Their own demise seems minor in comparison to the depths to which this prisoner has fallen.

It has been many years since Renaldo entertained thoughts of escape. He realized the futility of this dream decades ago. His former, combative spirit has been replaced by intense depression and sorrowful resignation. Dejected, Renaldo has given up on ever experiencing the freedom for which he so ardently longs.

_______________________

The little aperture he calls a “window” indicates that night has fallen. Another wretched day has drawn to a close. Forlorn and heavyhearted, Renaldo despondently lays his head down for one more restless night’s sleep. Little does he know that tomorrow’s light will bring a revelation of despair-shattering proportions. But that is another chapter...
