Papua New Guinea Art

In a celebration of mother-daughter artistry, the 3d paintings below are by the daughter of the photographer of the prints listed. Brenda Wehrman (founder of ValYOU) is an American who grew up in Papua New Guinea amongst reformed Cannibals. She was just 8 months old when her mother (the photographer) and father took her into the jungles of the Highlands provinces of Papua New Guinea where they set up schools and clinics to help the indigenous people. Many prominent citizens of that country owe their start to this amazing couple - including a former ambassador to the United States and a Governor General.

Brenda's maternal grandfather was the first Caucasian to enter Cannibal Territory and came out alive! Discover how huge other-worldly warrior beings appeared in his defense as he was about to be eaten for dinner. On another occasion when he and his daughter were going to be killed by a group of villagers, two large mysterious men in white with flaming swords appeared on their front porch to protect them from harm.  Brenda tells these amazing stories and of many more in the book entitled, Cannibals, Grass-Skirted Angels and the Apparition Army.

The pictures below are extremely rare and desirable because most were taken in the 1960 - 1970's as part of the family's private collection during pre-independence 1975 when the country was annexed from Australia. Most are 8x10 and have good detail and tonal range. The photographs have never been framed and come to you as prints ready for you to enjoy these must-have talking points in your home.

Note from Brenda: My parents unselfishly spent over two decades of their lives overseas in Papua New Guinea seeking to serve the indigenous people. While their peers were setting themselves up for retirement, this couple unreservedly gave of their time and resources with heartfelt joy and love; however, it cost them financially to do so. Please order these pictures as sales go to them. Thanks for shopping and for helping these wonderful people. I am truly blessed to have such remarkable parents with a legacy of dedication as a result of their example. Their incredible experiences and more pictures can be found by ordering: "Cannibals, Grass Skirted Angels..." Learn of the dangerous events that would have any angel working overtime."

Does your loved one (maybe someone in the military) need to be strengthened by the knowledge that fortifying defense can appear just when they need it most? Maybe they need to hear of the phantom army who turned the tide in a loosing battle? Or perhaps of how Brenda herself escaped death at the hand of a madman with a knife to her throat? You will encouraged and uplifted. Strengthen your soul’s reserves as you hear true incidences of interceptive protection. Get this book: “be an angel” to your family and friends who are in the military - here or abroad. Note: It is especially encouraging to those who returning or have returned.

3-D Paintings By Brenda

This art was inspired by the photographs on the right and her memories of life in the jungles of PNG) All paintings are on textured canvas ready to be hung.

Black and White Photographs by her Mother
Seen here just before leaving for PNG where she set up some clinics and treated many thousands over a span of 20 years. This brave woman once walked into the middle of a tribal war to try and stop the fight! Brenda's father is on the right.

Warrior 1: This is a gorgeous painting with a detailed black outline of the warrior in action. Like the other paintings of warriors below, it comes with layers upon layers of feathers, beads, leather and other 3D accessories to bring it alive!

Warrior 1: A man running with his bow and arrows. Many of these arrow tips were made out of stone – literally placing these undiscovered tribes in the Stone Age category. His body is painted and the head piece is made of black cassowary feathers. The girls behind him are in ceremonial dress. 8x10

Warrior 2: Rich in details, this painting  makes a big impression in any decor. It is has a solid black outline and the 3-D attire of a wealthy village man.

Warrior 2: A stately warrior with a tall headpiece made from the now protected national Bird of Paradise. The base of the hat is intricately made from tightly woven approx. 1’ human hair. Bones protrude from his hat and nose. 8x10

Warrior 3: A frontal view of a Highlands man, deep in the interior of Papua New Guinea. Feathers hang from his ears and his headpiece is adored with a burst of color. The nose is painted bright red in preparation for a native dance.

Warrior 3: Like the warrior above, this man’s hat was almost entirely woven from human hair only about an inch in length, decorated with Bird of Paradise feathers. These head pieces are so hard to make and take so long, that they are passed down through many generations. This man's face is painted black to add to the dramatic impact. 8x10

Warrior 4:The slats around the center man’s neck represent how many wives and pigs he owns. These were the two status symbols of wealth.

Warrior 4: Man ready for a dance or Singsing. The valuable Kina Shell around the man’s necks was traded as currency before the Australian dollar and later the national Kina Dollar was introduced. Behind this man is a woman in full ceremonial regalia. 8x10

Warrior 5:A side profile of a warrior with a bone tusk protruding from his nose. The earring and other items are 3-D, with beautiful beads adoring his headpiece.

Warrior 5:A man ready for battle, standing beside a thatched hut. This illustrates the typical design of their homes. A hole at the top allows for some smoke to escape and a fire is built in the center of the hut with the family sleeping around the open fireplace for warmth. 8x10

Flower 1: Modern art piece with tropical flower and huge feathers as "leaves" Cassowary-type spray of feathers at base with a black shadow outline painted beneath the 3-D upper layers.

Flower 1: Experience the old-fashioned luster of the black and white photograph on your wall. A great quality print with lots of detail. 8x10

Orchid. A more contemporary flavor with white orchids and feathers as "leaves." Silver accents with a black shadow outline painted beneath the 3-D upper layers.

Orchid. A spectacular photograph of an tropical variety that is very high quality (click to see larger sample picture). You can see the drops of rainforest water on the trio blossom. Breathtaking in beauty. 8x10

Collection of prints: (You get all 3 photographs in the set when you order)

Women & Children set - 8x10: The little girls holding hands are dressed up for a special village celebration. The two twins were babies that Brenda's mother saved. Until she began encouraging the natives to do things differently, they considered twins to be a bad omen and would bury one alive. The picture on the right is of two young women ready in all their finery for a dance.

Ritual set 5x7: On the left is a funeral in the 1960 – the early years of outside settlement. The body was placed between two poles, cradled in a blanket and the mourners would pull at the hair with mud until his/her hair resembled dreadlocks as seen in the picture. Loud wailing and cutting of the ears would take place until this practice was later stopped. The middle picture is a tropical man in clay typically worn over one's entire body during mourning. On the right is a man holding skulls of his ancestors.

Transportation set: 5x7: On the left is a native man crossing over a bridge made of vines hanging precariously over a raging river. Reminiscent of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” it is a sight to behold. Seemingly suspended in mid air, this bridge cost the life of one of the men who built it for when he fell in, the speed of the river made rescue impossible. It is reported that this river ran underground for thirty miles or more, tunneling a hole through mountains before it surfaced on the other side, deeper into the highlands of Papua New Guinea. In the middle is a photograph of the family's airstrip for many years. It was kept short with many men who used machetes - no such thing as a lawnmower. The huge mountains ranges, heavy tropical rainfall and clouded skies made it near impossible to use instruments. The two men on the right use a pole system that carted in our supplies. In the earliest years there were no roads in or out. It was a day's walk to get even basic supplies - which made our family very isolated and medical emergencies a concern.

Landscape set: 10x8: A gorgeous picture of a rainbow with a thatched hut to the side. A magnificent mountainous ridge in the background. This picture is approximately 40 years old and therefore has some small flicks in the picture. Beautiful nonetheless. The middle picture is of a raging river; many such rivers contain pocket of dangerous whirlpools and because of the speed, can be deceptively deep. The far right picture is a view from the large high school for the underprivileged that was started by Brenda's father. There are a group of young men in the foreground.
