Juniper Ranch, a majestic 500-acre stud farm lay nestled at the foot of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. Yet waking each morning to the sun coming over the top of Lone Peak did nothing to put Hank Bixby in a good mood. Perhaps Bixby’s melancholy could be attributed to his ill-positioned role of ranch owner. The den’s ornate trophies and lavish tributes on golden plaques were not his own. They were his dad’s – from another era, another world, of which Hank knew dreadfully little.

But what Bixby lacked in ranch experience, he made up for in stubborn ambition. Had he not chosen to pursue a law degree in Manhattan, New York, he might have made a good cowboy. He had the physique for it. A towering man, Bixby had a barrel-chest, thick eyebrows and a belligerent jaw. His presence could be as imposing as his expectations. He knew what he wanted in life and had perfected the vile art of pressuring and guilt-inducing other people into giving it to him.

While Hank’s overbearing charm may have produced results for him in the past, in recent days, no amount of coercing and cajoling his staff seemed to be pulling his ranch out of near bankruptcy. Despite sporting 50 broodmares and eight stallions – each impressively sired, the farm had little to boast of lately.

Several years ago he’d hired James Pierce, a soft-spoken ex-jockey who vowed he knew what it took to feed, train and prep outstanding horses but still no success.

The autumn weather had been consistently humid and clingy, periodically broken only by copper piercings of jagged lightening and sonorous rumblings. Hank paused to wonder if today’s storm with its ghastly reverberating echoes brought a foreboding message of even darker days to come.

Bixby wasn’t going to sit back and just let financial ruin overrun and obliterate his livelihood like a pack of rabid wolves. It wasn’t his style. Transferring his frustrations to another was. By Jove, his chief of staff was going to get a piece of his mind.
