Due to growing up amongst reformed cannibals I have seen first hand the brilliance of people to rise above personal challenges to make tremendous strides despite living in disadvantaged situations. I deeply admire how some of those natives pushed beyond their environmental constrictions to nevertheless excel at an international level. Some literally became global ambassadors. For instance, I have a picture of a little naked boy standing beside a grass hut. This snapshot was taken by my aunt just before my parents arrived in his village with a 9 month old baby (yours truly).  Amazingly, that boy went on to live in a mansion in Washington DC as an ambassador to the United States of America. Another boy became Governor General of the country and an ambassador to yet another country. English was a foreign language for them - not to speak of the daunting cultural challenges: these people lived in a Stone Age time warp (their spear arrowheads where made out of stone)! It's an inspiration to consider that they were able to make such enormous adjustments and progress in just one generation!

In visiting Africa, Asia, the South Pacific and other developing countries, I am constantly amazed at the way these people take what little they have and create complex finished commercial products. As an example, in Nigeria I saw along the road side showroom-ready fully upholstered sofas created in an 8x8 foot shanty that would fall over if you pushed hard enough. Most are not lazy as some presume. Rather, these entrepreneurs lacked access to on-going business training (a book can cost half their monthly income - income they can't afford to spare). Further they are bombarded by generations of self-sabotaging family-imposed collectivist control where the moment they get ahead they are pressured to part with their hard-earned cash. They live in countries facing, crippling health crises like AIDS, severely depressed economies, and in many cases, rampant government corruption that goes practically unchecked. But as much as the people of these nations need financial assistance, money alone is not the answer. Despite over US$80 billion in foreign aid last year, most will remain in a destitute state. EDUCATION is paramount to change mindsets that have led to cycles of poverty and to rise up ethical leaders who will confront the corruption.
